So, we finally get to the SPI Files novels. The series includes “Lucky Charms” (a short in the Night Shift anthology), The Grendel Affair, The Dragon Conspiracy, The Brimstone Deception, The Ghoul Vendetta, and The Myth Manifestation which came out in January. They concern the adventures of Makenna Fraiser, Seer and agent for Supernatural Protection and Investigations, an agency protecting … Continue reading Stop Repeating Yourself – SPI Files
As I spent most of January reading the works of Lisa Shearin I wanted to give a little more space and thought to reviewing these books than my normal "what I've been reading" posts. Then I realized that this post was getting too long itself and split it into three separate posts. So expect more … Continue reading Don’t Get Stabbed By A Love Triangle – Raine Benares Series
As promised, here are my top picks for books this year. Best SF/Fantasty books in 2017 A Dragon of a Different Color by Rachel Aaron The Delirium Brief by Charles Stross Neogenesis by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller From Ruins by M. C. A. Ok, so this post is late. In fact it's over a week late. In my defense, the Children's Museum just announced that it bought a building and will be moving in a few years, which means work has been cray-z. But that's no excuse for not getting writing done. My resolution for 2018 is to … Continue reading What I’ve Been Reading – December 2017
Where did November go? In fact, what happened to the first week of December? Given how busy I was in November - I was traveling 17 days out of 30 - I'm not surprised it went quickly, or that I got very little reading done. I also didn't win NaNo. But I did get writing … Continue reading What I’ve Been Reading – November 2017
So, October tried to outdo September for passing quickly. It was all rereads this month. And almost exclusively rereads of a single author, or rather a pair of co-writers. I basically devoted the month to the Kate Daniels series. I did pick up several new books towards the end of the month, notably Nnedi Okorafor's … Continue reading What I’ve Been Reading – October 2017
I'm currently rereading one of my favorite series the Kate Daniels books by Ilona Andrews, who is actually the husband and wife team Gordan and Ilona Andrews. Seriously, if you haven't read these, they're one of the best urban fantasy series on the market, and they have one of the best worldbuilding premises I've come … Continue reading Open with your hook – Magic Bites
Wow, September went by really fast. I've just taken a look at my reading list and I only read 10 books this month (my average is closer to 15). Some of that I'm sure was catching up on a few animes. But I've also been knitting and spinning quite a bit to get ready for the colder weather.
August was a lot of catching up on the new releases from last month. I also squeezed in a new series, a few old favorites and my book club book a month early. Despite reading 12 books this month my spreadsheet informs me that I’m actually down a bit in terms of books read this month. I expect that’s because of all the writing I’ve been doing. That said, here’s what I read this month
A few weeks ago I quit a series in disgust. It started out OK but rapidly devolved into something actively painful to read. The final book I read (#6) was so bad I literally yelled at my e-reader on the train. Normally my inclination would be to focus on the good in a novel, but this blog is supposed to be about what I’m learning and I learned a lot from this series despite it’s increasing awfulness.
